Sasquatch: Furry Friend, Fuzzy Foe, or Just a Really Big Fluffy Mystery?

Sasquatch: Furry Friend, Fuzzy Foe, or Just a Really Big Fluffy Mystery?

Welcome to our blog series, where we dig into the hairy history and mysterious shenanigans of the one and only Sasquatch—AKA “Bigfoot”, or as we like to call him, “Our Bearded Bestie." Whether you're a die-hard believer, a skeptic who secretly wants to be convinced, or just someone with a love for all things weird and wild, you’ve stumbled into the right neck of the woods. We’ll be exploring legends, sifting through eyebrow-raising eyewitness accounts, and sifting through evidence that’s kept Sasquatch lurking in our imaginations (and maybe our backyards) for generations. So grab your binoculars, and let’s go squatching!

What or Who is Sasquatch? A misunderstood forest hipster, a champion hide-and-seek player, or just your average guy who forgot to shave for a few centuries?

The name "Sasquatch" is derived from the Halkomelem word "sásq’ets," used by indigenous peoples in the Pacific Northwest to describe a "wild man of the woods.”  Sasquatch being called “the wild man of the woods” is like saying, “if the shoe fits-well in this case if the Bigfoot fits—wear it.”  The elusive legend of the woods is said to roam the forests of North America, especially the misty, mysterious Pacific Northwest. Imagine a giant, hairy roommate you never see, but who definitely raids your fridge at night—that’s Sasquatch.

The Man, The Myth, The Furry Legend.

Stories of sásq’ets have been passed down through generations of indigenous peoples in North America with more modern tales of Sasquatch dating back centuries, long before we named the pointed mustache and goatee the “Van Dyck”.  Most early accounts describe Squatch as a creature that lived at one with nature but was also feared for its immense strength–like a tree-hugging hippie, but with the muscle to turn that tree into toothpicks if you got on its bad side.  While descriptions vary, most agree he’s a towering, fur-covered figure, somewhere between 6 and 10 feet tall (depending on whether he’s wearing his platform tree-bark sandals). One of the earliest written accounts of Sasquatch comes from a 1792 journal entry by a British explorer who recounted hearing stories from local tribes about a “hairy giant” living in the forest.  Some say he’s the missing link; others think he’s just a nature lover who got really, really into No-Shave November and never looked back.

Until next time, keep your eyes peeled and your camera handy, fellow Squatch - spotters!
